    Level 1 Korean Language Course (Beginner)

    Level 1 is designed for learners who are completely new to Korean or have minimal exposure to the language. Students learn fundamental Korean pronunciation, Hangeul reading and writing, and basic sentence patterns needed for simple daily communication in Korea.

    1. Learning Objectives

    • Master Hangeul reading and writing; develop accurate pronunciation of Korean consonants and vowels.
    • Understand and use essential vocabulary and basic grammar structures for everyday situations.
    • Engage in simple conversations about personal information, daily routines, and immediate needs.
    • Read and comprehend short, simple texts such as signs, menus, and basic messages.
    • Write simple sentences and short paragraphs introducing oneself and describing daily activities.
    • Develop foundational listening skills to understand basic spoken Korean in familiar contexts.

    2. Course Contents

    A. Pronunciation & Writing System

    • Comprehensive study of Hangeul: 19 consonants and 21 vowels
    • Rules for syllable formation and final consonants (받침)
    • Pronunciation rules: consonant assimilation, tensification, nasalization
    • Intonation patterns for statements, questions, and requests
    • Accurate reading and writing practice through dictation and reading exercises

    B. Grammar & Sentence Patterns

    • Basic sentence structure: Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order
    • Particles: 이/가 (subject), 은/는 (topic), 을/를 (object), 에 (location/time), 에서 (at/from)
    • Tenses: Present tense (해요/합니다), past tense (-았/었어요), future tense (-겠어요/ㄹ 거예요)
    • Honorific speech: Basic polite forms (존댓말) for different social contexts
    • Question forms: Yes/no questions, wh-questions (누가, 무엇, 어디, 언제, 왜, 어떻게)
    • Negation: 안 and 못 for negative expressions
    • Ability and possibility: -ㄹ 수 있다/없다 (can/cannot)
    • De ive sentences: Using adjectives to describe people, places, and things

    C. Vocabulary Topics

    • Personal Information: Name, nationality, age, occupation, family members
    • Numbers & Time: Cardinal and ordinal numbers, telling time, days of the week, months, dates

    • Food & Dining: Common Korean dishes, fruits, vegetables, restaurant vocabulary, ordering food
    • Shopping: Clothing, colors, sizes, prices, quantities, payment methods

    • Weather & Seasons: Weather conditions, four seasons, temperature expressions

    D. Functional Communication Skills

    • Greetings & Introductions: Formal and informal greetings, self-introduction, exchanging contact information
    • Asking & Answering Questions: Basic information exchange about oneself and others
    • Making Requests: Polite requests and asking for help or permission
    • Shopping: Asking for prices, negotiating, expressing preferences
    • Ordering Food: Reading menus, ordering at restaurants, asking about ingredients
    • Getting Around: Asking for and giving directions, using public transportation
    • Making Appointments: Suggesting times and places, accepting or declining invitations

    Writing Exercises Writing diaries about daily activities, composing simple emails or text messages, filling out forms, and creating short de ive paragraphs.
    Cultural Activities Introduction to Korean culture through activities like trying Korean traditional games, learning basic Korean etiquette, or exploring local cultural sites in Wanju and Jeonju.

    5. Assessment & Evaluation

    Final Examination 25% Cumulative final exam testing all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and comprehensive knowledge of Level 1 content.

    By the End of Level 1, Students Will Be Able To:

    • Read and write Hangeul fluently and pronounce Korean accurately
    • Introduce themselves and others in various social contexts
    • Conduct simple conversations about daily life, routines, and personal experiences
    • Understand and respond to basic questions about personal information, time, location, and activities
    • Navigate essential survival situations: ordering food, shopping, asking for directions
    • Write simple paragraphs about familiar topics (self-introduction, daily routine, family)
    • Understand short spoken conversations and simple written texts on familiar topics
    • Use basic Korean grammar and sentence patterns with appropriate politeness levels

    Progression to Level 2 (Intermediate-Beginner):

    Students who successfully complete Level 1 will be ready to advance to Level 2, where they will:

    • Expand vocabulary to approximately 1,500-2,000 words
    • Learn more complex grammar structures and sentence patterns
    • Develop ability to express opinions, emotions, and abstract ideas
    • Engage in extended conversations on familiar topics
    • Read longer texts including simple news articles and stories
    • Prepare for TOPIK Level 1-2 (if interested in certification)

    7. Study Tips for Level 1 Success

    • Practice Daily: Spend at least 30-60 minutes each day reviewing vocabulary and grammar, even outside of class time.
    • Use Flashcards: Create vocabulary flashcards (physical or digital) to regularly review new words and expressions.
    • Speak Korean: Practice speaking with classmates, language exchange partners, or even by talking to yourself in Korean throughout the day.
    • Watch Korean Content: Watch Korean dramas, variety shows, or YouTube videos with subtitles to improve listening comprehension.
    • Keep a Korean Diary: Write a few sentences every day about your activities, thoughts, or experiences in Korean.
    • Immerse Yourself: Take advantage of living in Korea by reading signs, menus, and notices in Korean; practice ordering food in Korean at restaurants.
    • Don't Be Afraid to Make Mistakes: Language learning involves making errors. Use mistakes as learning opportunities.
    • Join Study Groups: Form study groups with classmates to practice together and support each other's learning.

    Important Notes:

    • The above curriculum and weekly plan are general examples. Actual class content, pace, and activities may vary depending on the instructor's teaching approach and the specific needs of students in each class.
    • Level placement is determined by a placement test administered at the beginning of each semester. Students should be honest about their Korean language background to ensure appropriate placement.
    • Classes will not be conducted if there are fewer than 5 students enrolled at a particular level. In such cases, students may be placed in the nearest appropriate level or offered alternative arrangements.
    • Regular attendance (minimum 80%) is mandatory. Poor attendance may affect visa status for international students on D-4 visas and may result in course failure.
