    The Korean Language Program at Kwangwoon University’s Institute of International Education provides systematic Korean language and culture education for international students in Seoul. The Regular Program is operated on a 4-term system (spring, summer, fall, and winter) with six levels from Level 1 to Level 6, and offers 200 hours of intensive classes per term (4 hours a day, 5 days a week).     Systematic 6-Level Regular Program

    The Regular Program consists of six levels (Level 1–6) offered four times a year. Each term runs for 10 weeks with 4 hours of class per day, Monday to Friday (a total of 200 hours), focusing on integrated skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students are placed into an appropriate level after taking a placement test.

    Rich Support & Free Extra Classes

    Kwangwoon offers a pre-training period before the start of each term, free Korean alphabet classes, a Korean language clinic and tutoring program, and free TOPIK preparation classes. Various learning contents and systematic pronunciation training help students build confidence step by step.

    Program Overview

    The Kwangwoon University Korean Language Regular Program is a 6-level course (Levels 1–6) for international students and overseas Koreans who wish to study Korean in Seoul. The curriculum focuses on integrated education in four skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and offers various free support programs such as TOPIK preparation classes, tutoring, and cultural activities. Students who complete the language course can also benefit from an undergraduate-linked admission system and scholarship opportunities.

    Application Procedure

    1. Consultation & Course Selection

      Submit the online application and statement of purpose via Study in Korea (studyinkorea.go.kr) or according to the latest instructions, then prepare and send original required documents.

    Completion & Promotion Criteria

    Completion Requirements

    • Attendance: Classes are 200 hours per term. Students with an attendance rate below 80% (i.e., less than 160 hours) may not complete the level.
    • Grades:
      • Mid-term and final written exams are held each semester.
      • The perfect score in each subject is 100 points; students with an average below 70 fail the level.
      • If any subject (speaking, listening, reading, or writing) is below 40 points, the student fails, even if the total average is 70 or higher.
    • Cheating on tests results in a score of 0 for the relevant subject.
    • Visa-related attendance: Visa extension is not permitted if attendance is under 70%.

    Reasons for Ineligibility or Expulsion

    • If a student fails the same level three times in a row, they are expelled from the center.
    • Students who fail due to insufficient attendance for two consecutive terms may be expelled.
    • Serious violations (disturbing classes, cheating, criminal acts, fraud, theft, assault, etc.) may lead to expulsion with no tuition refund.
    • Students who do not pay tuition within the re-registration period or are absent for more than a week without contact may be expelled, and their visa can be cancelled.

    Kwangwoon University Korean Language Regular Program Application Guidelines

    This guide is for students applying to the Kwangwoon University Institute of International Education (KIIE) Korean Language Regular Program. Please check the eligibility, application procedure, required documents, tuition, and contact information carefully before applying.

    1. Eligibility

    • Applicants who graduated from high school or possess attainments equivalent to high school graduation.
    • Applicants who can submit official academic documents (graduation certificate, tran , etc.) and financial documents required for visa and admission screening.
    • Applicants with no disqualifying reasons for studying Korean in Korea or obtaining a visa.
    • Applicants who plan to study more than one term may apply for a D-4 General Student Visa according to immigration regulations.

    ⚠️ Important Notes for Specified Countries

    • Applicants from Ministry of Justice specified countries (e.g. Vietnam, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, etc.) are required to submit additional financial/supporting documents and may be subject to an interview during screening.
    • For these countries, the registration deadline is earlier than for other countries. Please check the schedule and apply as early as possible.
    • Applicants who already have a valid stay status in Korea (do not need a D-4 visa) can usually apply until about 3 weeks before the semester begins, within the announced registration period.

    2. Application Procedure

    1. Online application & document upload
      Complete the online application on the Study in Korea website and upload the required documents.
    2. Application fee payment
      Pay the non-refundable application fee of 50,000 KRW.
    3. Submission of original documents
      Send the original documents (graduation certificate, tran , financial documents, etc.) by post or submit in person to the Kwangwoon University Institute of International Education office.
      ※ For D-4 visa applicants, original documents should arrive well before the registration deadline.
    4. Document screening
      The Institute reviews your online application and original documents. Additional interview may be required for applicants from specified countries.
    5. Announcement of results & tuition invoice
      Successful applicants are notified by email and receive a tuition invoice (registration guide).
    6. Tuition payment
      Pay the regular program tuition within the designated period to finalize registration.
    7. Issuance of Certificate of Admission
      After tuition is paid and screening is complete, the Standard Admission Letter / Certificate of Admission is issued (for visa application).
    8. Visa application & entry to Korea
      Apply for a D-4 General Student Visa at the Korean embassy/consulate in your country with the admission certificate → Enter Korea.
    9. Placement test & start of semester
      Take the Korean level test on the designated date and begin classes in the appropriate level.

    Level 1 Regular Korean Course Curriculum (Beginner 1)

    This is an introductory course designed for learners who are studying Korean for the first time. In the Kwangwoon University Korean Language Regular Program, students in Level 1 learn Hangul (Korean alphabet), basic pronunciation, and essential everyday expressions, while building a foundation for integrated skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing over one 200-hour term (4 hours a day, 5 days a week).

    1. Learning Objectives

    • Accurately read and write Hangul consonants and vowels and understand basic pronunciation rules.
    • Carry out very simple everyday communication such as greeting, self-introduction, and shopping for basic items.
    • Create simple sentences using basic grammar and approximately 800 core vocabulary items.
    • Understand and express basic information such as numbers, time, and dates.
    • Read and write short, simple sentences in Korean.

    ⚠️ Completion Requirements

    • Attendance rate of 80% or higher (students who miss more than 8 of 40 classes may not complete the level).
    • Overall average of 70 points or higher out of 100, with at least 40 points in each of the 4 skills.
    • Students who fail the same level repeatedly or have very low attendance may be restricted from re-enrollment according to institute regulations.
