About Soongsil University

Soongsil University holds a unique place in Korean history as the first modern university in Korea, founded in 1897 by Dr. W.M. Baird, an American Christian missionary. Originally established in Pyongyang, the university demonstrated its principles by closing in 1938 in protest against forced worship at Japanese shrines during colonial rule. Re-established in Seoul in 1954, Soongsil has maintained its mission of contributing to society through education and research excellence for over 120 years.

Today, Soongsil is a prestigious private Christian university located in the Sangdo area of Seoul, renowned for its Computer Science, IT, and Engineering programs.
