Introduction to Korean Language Program at Ewha Womans University Language Center
Ewha Language Center (ELC) is a language education institution affiliated with Ewha Womans University, providing level-appropriate Korean language education and Korean cultural experience opportunities to learners from around the world through intensive regular Korean courses, short-term courses, and commissioned programs. Communication-Centered Integrated Education

Team Teaching & Korean Culture Classes
Through team teaching where two instructors lead each class, students can experience diverse teaching styles, and through culture classes teaching Korean culture, students can understand language and culture together.
Level-Based Small Class Formation
Through level tests before admission, classes are organized by level from beginner to advanced (Levels 1-6), with small classes of approximately 15 students or fewer per class. If there are fewer than 6 applicants, the class may not be opened.

Ewha Womans University Language Center Intensive Korean Regular Program Study Abroad Package
The Intensive Korean Language Program (IKLP) at Ewha Language Center is a 10-week regular course offered four times a year (spring, summer, fall, winter). It is an intensive language training program where you can improve your Korean skills, experience Korean culture, and prepare for studying in Korea—all in one course. With level-based (1–6) small classes and integrated lessons, students can develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in a well-balanced way.
Program Overview
The Intensive Korean Language Program (IKLP) at Ewha Language Center is a 10-week regular Korean program offered four times a year (spring, summer, fall, winter). With 5 days a week, 4 periods a day (total 200 hours per semester), it offers integrated Korean language education and is suitable for learners who wish to prepare for studying, working, or living in Korea.

Completion Requirements
- Attendance: At least 80% of total class days (at least 40 out of 50 days for a 10-week semester)
- Grades: Minimum overall average of 70 points and at least 60 points in each skill (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
Promotion & Completion Notes
- Students must meet both attendance and grade requirements to be promoted to the next level.
- In certain cases (repeated failure, violation of academic regulations, etc.), enrollment for the next semester may be restricted.
- Students who complete at least two semesters of the Intensive Program (Levels 1–6) and finish Level 6 are recognized as graduates of the ELC Intensive Korean Program.
Refund Policy (Intensive Program – Summary)
- The admission fee (Application Fee) is generally non-refundable.
- The eligibility and percentage of tuition refunds depend on the time of the refund request (before or after the start of the semester and days elapsed).

This is the admission guide for students who wish to apply to the Intensive Korean Program at Ewha Womans University Language Center. 1. Eligibility
- Male or female foreigners or overseas Koreans (Koreans residing abroad) with a high school diploma or higher
- Applicants who can submit proof of their highest academic qualification (graduation certificate, etc.) with Apostille or consular legalization in accordance with the regulations of their country
- Applicants with no disqualifying reasons for participating in Korean language classes or staying in Korea
- D-4 (language training) visa applicants must be able to prove sufficient funds for at least 2 terms (approx. 6 months) of study abroad expenses and comply with visa screening regulations.
⚠️ Important Notes (Required documents differ by country & visa type)
- Applicants already holding a visa & those registering for one term only: Only relatively simple documents such as passport copy, alien registration card copy, and copy of the final school graduation certificate are required.
- D-4 visa applicants: Required documents vary significantly depending on whether the applicant is from a visa-agreement / non-agreement country, or holds Thai, Chinese, or Uzbek nationality.
- Applicants with Thai, Chinese, or Uzbek nationality: Additional documents such as bank balance certificates, employment/income certificates, and personal guarantee letters may be required, including long-term fixed deposit conditions. Sign up on the Ewha Womans University Language Center online registration system (atom.ewha.ac.kr) and fill out and submit the application form for the Intensive Korean Program. -

D-4 Visa Application Documents for Chinese Nationals
Chinese applicants typically need the application form, photo, passport copy, copies of household register (hukou) and ID cards (for parents and applicant), graduation certificate of final education, the Chinese Ministry of Education academic credential verification and tran , study plan, and a bank balance certificate of at least KRW 10,000,000 (for 2 terms), among others. For detailed document lists and forms, please refer to the Chinese-language pages and the Chinese nationality section of the Registration Guide on the Ewha Womans University Language Center website.
※ Documents written in languages other than Korean, English, Chinese, or Japanese may require translation into Korean or English and notarization.
※ It is generally recommended that documents be issued within 6 months of the application date, and financial documents such as bank balance certificates
are usually required to be issued within 1 month.
※ Submitted documents will not be returned under any circumstances. Please confirm whether reissuance is possible before submission.
※ If any document is found to be forged or falsified, admission will be cancelled and related records will be invalidated.
4. Admission Regulations (Summary)
- The Standard Certificate of Admission is issued only after the online application, submission of all required documents, and tuition payment are completed.
- Document screening begins only after all required documents have been received and usually takes about one week.
- If a significant time has passed since graduation, additional documents certifying recent activities may be requested.
- Submitted documents will not be returned, and reasons for rejection are not disclosed.
- Students in the Intensive Korean Program are covered by a group insurance policy arranged by the Language Center.
- Visa screening is conducted by immigration authorities and Korean embassies/consulates, and is separate from the Language Center’s admission decision.

Scholarship System (Summary)
- Korean Language Excellence Scholarship: Students in the Intensive Korean Program who are top achievers in each level and register for the following term may receive a 50% tuition scholarship.
- Language Center Korean Excellence Scholarship: Foreign freshmen who have completed at least 3 terms of the Intensive Korean Program, graduated from Level 6, and are admitted to Ewha’s undergraduate program (spring or fall intake) may receive partial tuition support (2 students per intake).
- Other Scholarships: Various scholarships such as ELC Family Scholarship, ELC Goodwill (Seon) Scholarship, and ELC Sibling Scholarship are available.

Curriculum and Textbooks
Level 1 Intensive Korean Course Curriculum (Level 1 · Beginner)
This level focuses on developing basic skills in reading and writing Hangeul and using simple sentences and everyday expressions for basic communication. It is an introductory level for learners who are new to Korean, and classes are conducted with an integrated, communication-based approach across the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
1. Learning Objectives
- Read and write Hangeul consonants and vowels, and understand basic final consonants (batchim) and pronunciation rules.
- Carry out simple conversations using basic expressions commonly used in daily life.
- Speak and write short sentences on easy topics such as self-introduction, family, and daily activities.
- Understand and express basic information such as numbers, time, dates, and prices.
- Read short, simple texts such as notes and notices and grasp the main ideas.
2. Course Content
Pronunciation
- Basic pronunciation of Hangeul consonants and vowels
- Pronunciation of final consonants (batchim) and syllable structure
- Basic pronunciation rules such as liaison and nasalization
- Intonation in plain (informal polite) sentences
- Pronouncing one’s own name, nationality, and place names accurately
Grammar
- Basic particles (이/가, 은/는, 을/를, 에, 에서, etc.)
- Basic present and past tense endings (-아요/어요, -았/었어요)
- Structures with 이다/아니다, 있다/없다
- Basic honorific usage according to relationship (teacher, friend, etc.)
- Basic negative expressions (안, 못)
- Basic connective endings (-고, -지만, etc.)
Vocabulary
- Greeting expressions and self-introduction (name, nationality, major/occupation)
- Family, friends, and school life-related vocabulary
- Numbers, time, dates, and days of the week
- Main places on campus, in the classroom, and around the city
- Basic vocabulary for food, shopping, and transportation
- Common verbs/adjectives used in daily life (e.g., 가다, 오다, 만나다, 좋다)
Conversation
- Greeting others, introducing oneself, introducing friends
- Practicing expressions frequently used in class and on campus
- Buying items, asking about prices, expressing quantities
- Asking and giving directions (e.g., Ewha Station, campus buildings)
- Making appointments and talking about daily routines
- Ordering at restaurants and talking about favorite foods
- Practicing simple phone and messenger conversations
3. Sample Activities
- Self-introduction Project: Presenting one’s name, nationality, mother tongue, and interests, plus pair interviews with classmates
- Numbers & Time Games: Number bingo, matching clock times, setting appointment times, etc. to practice numerical and time expressions
- Finding Places on Campus: Using a map of Ewha campus or the surrounding area for role-play on giving and following directions
- Shopping Role-play: Practicing situations for asking prices and buying items at a convenience store, stationery shop, or supermarket
- Restaurant Situations: Reading Korean menus, choosing dishes, and practicing ordering and making requests
- Short Writing Tasks: Writing about daily routines, weekend plans, and short messages to friends
- Introduction to Korean Culture: Learning about basic Korean etiquette and greetings, and introducing Ewha and the Sinchon area
