Introduction to Sogang University Korean Language Education Center

Sogang University Korean Language Education Center (KLEC) is a professional Korean language education institution established in 1990, with the goal of promoting the Korean language and Korean culture to the world. Since its founding, more than 30,000 international students have studied Korean language and culture here, and currently about 4,000 students register every year. Sogang KLEC is especially well-known for its “speaking-centered instruction”, and through a systematic curriculum and a team of professional instructors focused on improving communication skills, it helps students acquire practical Korean language ability in a short period of time.

Key Features of Sogang University Korean Language Education Center

    Speaking-Centered Instruction

The most distinctive feature of Sogang KLEC is its speaking-centered instruction. Out of the 4 hours of class per day, more than 2 hours are devoted to speaking activities. With task-based, communication-focused teaching, students develop practical Korean that can be used immediately in real-life situations. The focus is on actual conversation and communication skills rather than only grammar.

    Systematic 6-Level Curriculum

The program consists of a step-by-step curriculum from Beginner Level 1 to Advanced Level 6. It uses Sogang’s own “Sogang Korean” textbook series (about 57 volumes), which is designed with a strong focus on speaking. The materials are regularly updated every year to reflect the latest content and real-life situations, enabling highly effective learning.

    Full-Time Professional Faculty

All instructors are full-time faculty members who conduct classes with a high level of responsibility and passion. They are experts in Korean language education and Korean studies, and they regularly share research findings and teaching methods through workshops and meetings. A homeroom teacher system is operated to manage attendance, grades, and provide individual counseling for each student.

    Learner-Centered Education

The Center adopts a learner-centered teaching approach that focuses on each individual student. In the classroom, instructors act as facilitators, helping students learn how to express their own opinions. Each instructor has a private office, allowing for 1:1 consultations with students, and providing professional advice on Korean language study as well as life in Korea.
