Gyeongju Donggung and Wolji (Historic Site No. 18) served as the royal residence for Silla princes and a ceremonial venue for grand banquets and receptions for distinguished guests. After unifying the Three Kingdoms in 676, the Silla Kingdom expanded and beautified the palace complex to reflect its rising prestige. Wolji Pond was completed in 674, and in 679 the surrounding palace structures were renovated to create a splendid garden pavilion where the royal court celebrated national events.

Today, the restored pond and illuminated pavilions offer a magical nightscape—arguably one of Gyeongju’s most enchanting views—reflecting the elegance and cultural sophistication of ancient Silla.
