As you ascend along the trail, you will find yourself in a dense birch forest where the trees are more than 20 years old. Their white trunks and shimmering leaves create a scene that looks as if it has been lightly dusted with snow, and the tall birch trees reaching toward the sky create a uniquely serene and atmospheric landscape.

The best way to enjoy the scenery of Seoraksan is by taking the Seoraksan Cable Car. The cable car station is located inside the Seoraksan National Park small park area, and it takes about 10 minutes to reach Gwongeumseong Fortress, which sits about 700 meters above sea level. Round-trip tickets are required, as one-way travel is not available. During the ride, you can enjoy beautiful views of Seoraksan, including Ulsanbawi Rock and the surrounding peaks, through the wide glass windows.

Gwongeumseong Fortress is located about 800 meters above sea level on a wide stone plateau that once supported more than 80 sections of fortress grounds. Although the exact date of construction is unknown due to limited historical records, it is traditionally believed that two generals—Gwongeum and Kim—built the fortress during the Silla Dynasty to escape war and hardship.

Abai Village was formed when refugees from Hamgyeong Province fled south during the Korean War and were unable to return home after the armistice. They settled on a barren stretch of beach near the ceasefire line and gradually built houses, creating a small but vibrant community that still preserves traces of its North Korean heritage.

Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion is located on the rocky shore beneath the Sokcho Lighthouse in Dongmyeong-dong. Waves crashing against the rocks create a resonant sound similar to that of a Korean geomungo, giving the pavilion its name. Close to downtown and surrounded by beautiful ocean scenery, it is a popular spot for walking, sightseeing, and fishing year-round.

As one of Sokcho’s top scenic viewpoints, the Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory offers sweeping views of the East Sea and the surrounding landscapes. Once a functioning lighthouse, it now serves as a public observatory accessible through a wooden trail that winds up through a bamboo grove. From the top, visitors can enjoy views of Cheongcho Lake, migratory birds, and the rugged beauty of Seoraksan Mountain.

Sokcho Tourist Fish Market, also known as Sokcho Jungang Market, is one of the city’s most vibrant traditional markets. Among its many local specialties, Sokcho Dakgangjeong—a crispy fried chicken glazed in a sweet and spicy sauce made with jocheong and Cheongyang chili peppers—is especially famous.\r\nLoved by both locals and visitors, this dish stays remarkably crispy even after it cools down and is known for its clean flavor without any strong smell, making it a must-try snack when exploring the market.
